How to Protect forward-curved centrifugal fans from Corrosion to Extend Its Life

Centrifugal fans may encounter corrosion issues during use. What do we, LTC Ventilation do in the corrosion-resistant design for the forward-curved centrifugal fan?

First, selecting the right material for the centrifugal fan is crucial.

Because different materials and requirements on separation between materials decides different models. After determining the model and key parameters, choose the material for strength components, which is based on the corrosion resistance of various materials in different environments, their physicochemical properties, cost-effectiveness, and other factors. The centrifugal fan must be safe to be made of this selected material as well.

Second, the mechanical design of forward-curved centrifugal fans.

An excellent design can extend the service life of the equipment and ensure its safety. For structural design, the most flaws of common design that accelerate corrosion are stress concentration tendencies and crevice environments. Even when metal is immersed in a solution, corrosion may occurs slowly, but the formation of crevices can lead to severe crevice corrosion due to changes in the chemical and electrochemical conditions of the internal solution.

Third, surface protection measures for centrifugal fans

A fundamental approach to controlling corrosion is to isolate the corrosive environment. In the design of centrifugal fans, surface treatment methods are frequently employed, such as using flanges, galvanization, chrome plating, and chemical coatings.

These methods are effective in many environments, but for rotating components, a critical point must be considered: the base material and the coating are two distinct materials with different linear expansion coefficients. During elastic deformation of the rotating parts, this difference leads to varying deformation amounts, resulting in the formation of numerous microcracks. If this issue exists, it will accelerate the onset of corrosion.

The above is an introduction to anti corrosion of centrifugal fans, and the surface protection methods for rotating components should be applied with caution.
